Winter Break Learn-To-Row 2020

OARS will be offering a one week long introductory rowing camps designed for those looking to try a new sport over the winter holiday. This is a great chance to try a new sport over winter break!

About the camps:

No experience is necessary and participants will spend time learning the basics of rowing.  This is for high-school aged boys looking to try out the sport!

A single is a one person boat and is one of the best ways for athletes to develop skills, understand the effects their body movements have on a boat, and transition into good team boat rowers.

Our camp will run from 9 am -12pm. If we have sufficient demand, we may opt to stagger the start and end times, in cohorts of 8.

What to expect from camp?

Our camps will be coached by our Novice and Varsity Boys coaches. They will be helped out by existing athletes on the team, and recent graduates from four program, to ensure that your athlete has the attention needed to get out on the water.

The first day will be spent learning the rowing motion on land, and how to handle boats. They will then learn to row from the docks, before we venture out on the estuary. By the end of the week, we'll run a quick scrimmage on the water to show off the skills they have gained.

How is OARS providing a COVID safe environment for the athletes?

Our programming will be in single athlete racing shells outdoors. The full camp will be conducted out where there is a nice sea breeze. When on land and in close proximity, all athletes and staff will be required to wear masks.

On the water, athletes will only be in single-athlete rowing shells. These are roughly 26ft long, and the oars stick out 8ft to each side - giving them a wide berth on the water! Single shell rowing is the perfect sport in this social distanced world.

Our full coaching staff and team is regularly tested for COVID.
